Born in New Zealand and having spent most of our lives there, our dream to sail the Mediterranean sprang from our combined love of the sea and many years of cruising and racing around the New Zealand coast line and offshore to islands of the South Pacific.

We arrived in Europe in early April 2008 when we were fortunate to be invited to participate in the Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Rally (EMYR). Sailing from Turkey to Egypt via Cypress, Syria, Lebanon and Israel. This Rally gave us a wealth of experience in berthing Med style, overnight passaging, communication with port authorities, immigration procedures and navigation and sea and weather conditions in the Med.

From Israel we flew to Slovenia in June where we purchased our ideal vessel our 2003 Beneteau 411 Celebration (with performance rig) “SY Matelot”. She is a well appointed, safe and comfortable live aboard with an ability to sail and perform well.

Since arriving in the Med we have passaged over 3,000 nautical miles from Slovenia (Isola) in the Northern Adriatic, to Port Said in Egypt. We are loving this very special experience and are looking forward to sharing it with friends and family on board SY Matelot.

We are currently based in Kos Marina on Kos Island in Greece and will leave here mid March to continue with our cruising experiences.

Since there are two of us we will put the day we purchased our yacht “Matelot” as our birthday…

Richard has sailed all of his life, both racing and cruising mostly around New Zealand. Pippy his First Mate has 10 years sailing experience and is very bossy on board. Richard does as he is told…. sometimes.

Remarkable sailing experiences… every day out there on the water, but memorable for Richard, Two Handed Round North Island (NZ) Race on a 56ft Davidson in 2004. Richard and Pippy: Eastern Med Yacht Rally 2008 as well as passaging from Isola (Slovenia) to Kos Island in Greece 2008. Close second, sailing in Vav’au in Tonga with friends… shall we stop now?
