I am a liveaboard sailor.

I am a yachtmaster and started sailing in 2001, I liked it so much that I saved up to buy my own boat and go cruising around the world. It took me until last year to achieve this goal.

On my first ever sailing trip I went across the Bay of Biscay and was in 2 x Gale Force 9’s and one electrical Storm 10 – I was sailing on a 26ft monohull.

My first trip on my own boat across the Bay of Biscay was in my 26ft Heavenly Twins Catamaran, I took one crew member with me. We did 3 hour watches for 5 days. We left in October and waited at Falmouth, England for a good northerly wind to push us along, it took a while but a suitable weather system was forecast and away we went! The wind lasted for about 6 hours and then went very calm. I had to motor across the Bay of Biscay, using my 9.9 hp outboard engine, I took 140 litres of petrol with me but that looked in danger of running out after 3 days – I had to keep some as a reserve for getting into a harbour so had to turn off the engine and drift for 2 days. The current pushed me in the right direction at approx. 1.5 knots an hour. I changed my passage plan which had been to sail straight from Falmouth, England to Baiona, Spain, and headed for La Coruna in Spain instead, as it was a shorter distance.

The rest of my sailing trip from La Coruna to Baiona, and from Baiona to Portugal has been a motoring rather than sailing experience!

I am looking forward to doing some actual sailing this year!!
