Rather like Odysseus sailing from Troy to Ithaca, a totally random set of events involving pain, fear, delays and eventual triumph.
August 20, 2009: Apolgies to our readers for the lengthy break in our saga. Your e mails of concern for our welfare touched us deeply. Worry not, gentle reader, we are alive, dry and amazingly still afloat. Just to re-cap. A couple, of advanced years, with absolutely no sailing experience apart from two or three episodes of Hornblower and a quick look round the Cutty Sark go for a trip round the bay on an old O... » read more

Lough Neagh to somewhere around Ireland/Scotland
September 20, 2009: On Wednesday the wind had abated slightly and we decided to set off to Donegal. Fraser’s sister and her family were staying in a holiday cottage not far from Greencastle in lough Foyle, so we decided to pay them a visit. The sea was still pretty rough when we set off, so we decided to give all 3 children sea-sick pills. Big mistake. Although all 3 had shown themselves to ... » read more

August 15, 2010: We have just spent a fantastic week in Turkey and have come away with a wealth of experience. We flew out to Dalaman and were transfered to a flottilla in Fethiye. Our boat was called Sauntere and was a 34.3 Oceanis, this week turned out to be a whole new learning experience. Our lead boat which had the skipper, Allen, his wife, the hostess, Kristin and the engineer, Tom. They were ... » read more

Preparations to go cruising
June 15, 2011: After our first little trip I found a few things that did not work or needed some maintenance. The main thing was the autopilot. Although the delivery crew, who sailed the boat from England to Scotland, said the autopilot worked fine, I found it did not work when we took the boat out for a day sail. No big deal for a few hours, but of course I need this vital piece of equipment to work for... » read more

October 07, 2011: On Monday the 26th, with Torquil and his friends back at work in the City, we took our leave of Lymington, sailing quietly off our pontoon and out into the Solent. By lunchtime it became clear that the 2.5 knots we were making under sail were exactly counteracted by the 2.5 knots of tide running against us. We were pleasantly sailing along but going nowhere!Motoring gingerly into Southampton Wa... » read more
