The fog cometh and kept on coming

23.05.2010

Before we left Newport, RI, Spruce had to work on the engine again.  This time he had to perform surgery in the water.  Working on an engine is tough on land but it is near impossible in the water, but, he did and off we went on Sunday the 23rd.  When we left Newport it was a little overcast and the seas were calm.  As we reached the Connecticut border our visibility began to decrease to a hundred feet in front of us.  While in the fog the world around you becomes very small and moist.  We relied on our hearing, the GPS and my hawk-eyes.  Several times motorboats would come charging out of the fog only to disappear as quickly as they came.  Upon approaching Mystic, CT, we decided that we should get out of the fog and take up a mooring for the night and wait out the fog.  As we began our approach we noticed a rathe large sailboat, an even bigger motor boat getting ready to attempt the windy course in the fog dense fog.  The Large motorboat was from Mystic and took the lead, we went second (because we never pick up the rear! and we are a little more daring then most), the other sailboat pulled in behind us.  The fog lifted just enough to allow us to find a mooring at Fords and then blanketed the town again.  The following day we watched the fog as it would recede and then come creeping back in again.  Tuesday, was beautiful and we headed to Westbrook, CT.
